AGRICULTURE

Kherson province is a region of a high developed agricultural production. Its natural and climatic conditions, fertile soils favor growth of various agricultural crops.

Of other regions of Ukraine the province stands out with a high level of the production of grain crops, vegetables, fruit, and a developed diary and meat complex. Besides, the region contains 431.1 thousand hectares of irrigated land which takes up 22 per cent of the total agricultural area of Ukraine.

The agricultural branch has a considerable scientific and technical support represented by four scientific and industrial institutions: the Kherson State Industrial University, the Kherson State Agricultural University, the Institute of Cattle-breeding Askania Nova named for M.F. Ivanov, and four scientific Research Stations.

There are 430 agricultural farms and 3,634 farmsteads in the region. In the gross output of the region's agriculture the main role belongs to the plant-growing. The total area of agricultural land constitutes 2,033.2 thousand hectares, of which 1,970.5 thousand hectares are arable land, and pastures take up 155.6 thousand hectares.

The main directions of the plant- growing development are the growing of grain crops, oil-bearing crops, and vegetables. Grain crops are represented by a large variety of them- wheat, including winter wheat, rye, barley, oats, millet. Also sown and provide good yields corn, buckwheat, rape, mustard , coriander, legumes and fodder grasses of the legume-type .

An important place among the oil-bearing crops is taken up by sunflowers. Last year a complex for receiving and processing of 20,000 cu.m. Vegetable oil (four tanks of 5,000 cu.m each) has been set up and put into operation in Kherson.

Kherson region is rich in fruit orchards with their sweet cherries, apricots, peaches, apples, plums. Famed well beyond its boundaries for their taste are our water melons. Grapes grown on vast vineyards in our steppes add delicious savor and saturated color to the wines and cognacs of Kherson region.

Animal husbandry of the region is based primarily on breeding cattle, pigs, sheep, and poultry. Of new developing directions of this branch worth mentioning are some new and unusual, such as breeding of quails and ostriches. Dietetic meat and eggs of these birds are valued highly, and they are in demand.

The potential of the food and food processing branches of industry is represented by enterprises of various forms of property. Of them there are poultry factories, meat and dairy processing plants, butter making factories, and also factories for production of flour, groats, cheeses, catch-ups, mayonnaises, juices, canned vegetables and fruit, complexes for bread-baking. In the last time the factories are exploring new activities, and namely production of fresh frozen vegetables and fruits

The production made by the factories and plants busy in the sphere of agriculture and food processing, is in popular demand and successfully exported to many countries of the world.

INDUSTRY

Kherson region is characterized by an industrial complex which embraces many branches- food and food processing industries, machine building, electrical power generation, metalworking, chemical, fuel, pulp-and -paper, and light industries.

The machine building branch embraces plants specialized in ship building, the production of equipment for electrical engineering and materials handling, agricultural machinery, and automotive industry, the latter starting from 2001. The commodities of Kherson region enterprises are well known in the Ukraine and beyond. The plants of the region manufacture agricultural machinery, ocean-going ships and river vessels, tankers and passenger motor ships, technological equipment for processing plastics, equipment for electrical engineering, hydraulic- engineering structures, metal structures, and many other products.

Ship building has priority among machine building industries of the region. The Kherson shipbuilding yard carries out orders for building ships and installation of shipboard equipment not only from ship-owners but it also meets demands of many other industries regarding technically complicated articles. In the same branch operates one more enterprise, which enjoys high reputation not only on Ukraine but also beyond its borders. INFRASTRUCTURE

The main feature of economic-geographical region - its seaside location and the border, the yield on the Azov-Black Sea basin and the Dnieper River highway. Kherson is a transit area with a powerful transport system, which consists of rail, sea, river, road and air transport. All this allows the Kherson region to play an important role in establishing international and interregional transport linkages.

In the region are two of the international transport corridor: the first - this is the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) - 114 km, which forms the traffic flows in the Middle East and the Balkans in the direction of Mariupol and Novoazovsk. Second - Euro and Asian traffic flow from Europe through the Black Sea ports in the Crimea, Russia, the Caucasus and the East - 226 km.

The transport sector is an important component in the structure of the regional economy. In this industry are currently working on 88 companies and organizations. There is 1 airport, 3 commercial sea port, 2 river ports, 1 railway company, 5 of shipping companies of various forms of ownership, 77 companies operating in the market for road transport in the region. The transport system includes the seaways, 452,3 thousand km of railways, 4 934.1 km of roads that connect the Kherson region with other regions of Ukraine, CIS countries, Southeast Europe, the Caucasus and the Middle East.

Kherson sea port - the oldest port of Ukraine and the Black Sea Fleet in Ukraine and Russia in general. It arose in connection with the base Kherson more than 200 years ago. Today it is a powerful maritime enterprise. In the future - expanding transshipment complexes, which will enable to increase the volume of the port. Also provides for the participation in port investment project of building a deep cargo complex at the mouth of the Dnieper - Bug estuary. The introduction of this complex will accept large ships. The leading role in the implementation of the Kherson international transport project for a water-transport corridor North - South or the Daugava - Dnieper. In this corridor will play a significant role Kherson sea port.

Actively declares itself Skadovsk sea port. Founded over 100 years ago by Count Boris Skadovsky, which gave the name of the city, which is located in the port, he surely gets international status. There are already a ferry to the Turkish city of Zonguldak. Port is actively looking for new cargo for the development of international corridors to the countries of the Middle East and Central Asia. Now the port annually recycles hundreds of thousands of tons of various cargoes. Great prospects and in the Kherson river port, which is part of the joint-stock shipping company Ukrrechflot. This much has been done to enhance the capacity of cargo handling and improve passenger service. Annually Kherson boatman processed over one million tons of cargo. Important role in the provision of transport services is Kherson management of rail transport. In the area of its action is not only sea and river ports in the region, but also the pipeline Kremenchug - Kherson - Odessa. Kherson railway providing freight and passenger the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions and in part of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
