2011.12.30 – The Initiative of Kherson CCI to preserve the house-museum of Ostap Vyshnya

KCCI letter to Hanna Herman

Ostap Vyshnya  (real name Pavlo Hubenko, 13 November 1889 — 28 September 1956) —  the well-known Ukrainian writer and humorist. Most famous was his collection of short stories "Hunter's Smiles" that Maxim Rylsky called "lyrical poetry in prose". Ostap Vyshnya creates stories of sterling merit, nature always was a constant source of inspiration and creative ideas for him. From the pages of his stories he called "love nature, protect and guard it". As the writer himself, the characters in his stories see the meaning of hunting or fishing not in prey, but in enjoying the nature and vacation from everyday life. Respect to all life on our planet,  harmony of man and the world, love "to sun, towind, to green leaves" – that is the main theme of "Hunter's Smiles" by Ostap Vyshnya.

According to his contemporaries, in 1955 Ostap Vyshnya arrived in Krynki. Many of local hunters and fishers, whose he met there, later became prototypes for the “Hunter's Smiles” characters. Outstanding personalities of Ukrainian literature visited him there: Mykola Bazhan, Andrey Malyshko, Vladymyr Sosyura, Maxym Rylsky. After Vyshnya's death the house where he lived was turned into a museum, and in the yard a bust of the writer was set up. But the house eventually fell into disrepair. Reed roof is rotten and hasn’t been protecting the room from the rain for a long time, as a result – moisture damaged the walls and wooden floor. In order to save artifacts and furniture, they were given to the Tsyurupynsk branch of Kherson Museum of Regional Studies.

From the beginning of September 2011 the district prosecutor's office in Tsyurupynsk has been taking actions for the returning of the tourist base, where the house-museum of Ostap Vyshnya locates, into the public ownership. At the moment the case about the  house-museum is submitted to the court.

The initiative of the  Kherson Chamber of Commerce and Industry to prevent the further destruction of historically valuable cultural monument – the house-museum of Ostap Vyshnya – was supported by the Kherson Regional State Administration.
