2012.03.22 – Round table “The development of domestic tourism in the Kherson region: Problems and Perspectives”

On March 22 in Shovkunenko Kherson Art Museum a round table meeting was held. There were discussed trends and issues in the development of domestic tourism in the Kherson region, ways of development of intra-regional cooperation in the tourism market, creation and promotion of competitive tourism products in the Kherson region. The round table was organized by Kherson CCI.

The World Tourism Organization and the International Bureau of Social Tourism in order to preserve national interests recommends to maintain the optimal ratio of tourists entering the country and going beyond it as 4:1. Failure of the correlation in the tourism business in Ukraine can be explained due to a number of problems: lack of legal framework, lack of infrastructure, of national and regional development strategies, because of low-skilled personnel. As for Kherson these problems are complemented by the fact that there is no Kherson tourism product, a well-known and recognizable outside the region except perhaps the nature reserve "Askania-Nova".

Successful promotion and implementation of a competitive tourist and recreational Kherson product  involves the cooperation of state bodies, local self-government deputies, investment promotion agencies, and private initiatives, entrepreneurs working in the tourism and recreation, public works projects.

Such cooperation in the region today is very limited, besides there are no reasonable and effective and aggressive advertising policy, the completed investment projects, which could serve as a positive example in this area. In connection with the foregoing there is a need for clear and concerted action by all players in the regional tourism market, the relevant regional bodies, public and media.

To find a joint solution of problematic issues of Kherson tourism and to establish cooperation, over 80 participants attended the round table "The Development of Domestic Tourism": owners and managers of tourist facilities and accommodation facilities, tour itineraries, developers and regional specialists, academics, representatives of NGOs and youth clubs, media.

Roundtable participants presented about fifteen projects of tourist routes. Tours are designed from one day to two-week vacation: journey to green tourism estates and nature reserves, historical and ethnographic tourism, yachting routes, wineries visiting etc.

New directions of tourism development in the Kherson region are underestimated due to lack of competent advertising policy. As a result of the round table in the nearest future on the basis of the Kherson Chamber of Commerce and Industry a Committee on Tourism Issues will be set up in order to support and develop the competitive Kherson tourism product, to promote Kherson region on the Ukrainian tourist market.

To continue the theme of promoting the outstanding historical figures in Kherson history, raised at the first Howard's Readings on February 16, President of KCCI Victoria Ostroumova handed the book of British writer Tessa West «The Curious Mr Howard» to representatives of Kherson high school № 6, Kherson Museum of Regional Studies and Kherson department of State Penitentiary System. The books were purchased from a British publishing house by LLC "Kherson Mechanical Plant".
