2014.07.28 – Environmental initiatives of the Delivery service centre “Adresat”
Delivery service centre “Adresat” organizes collection of waste batteries and accumulators in different parts of Kherson and their delivery to Lviv state enterprise “Argentum” – one of the three largest recycling plants in the whole Europe.
Why shall we do it? Why not just throw them into the waste bin?
A battery, discarded together with household waste, will most likely go to landfill waste, decomposed in the open air. After the shell of such a battery is destroyed by corrosion, the land gets a large amount of harmful substances that can poison, according to some estimates, up to 20 square metres of land, or 400 litres of water.
Can it be so, that cylindrical batteries are so dangerous?
Heavy metals and other harmful substances contained in used batteries penetrate into soil and ground water, then – in rivers, lakes and other water bodies used for water supply, and finally, through food and drinking water they enter our bodies!
Effect of substances contained in batteries and accumulators on the human body:
Pb (lead) is accumulated in the body affecting kidneys, nervous system, and bone tissue;
Cd (cadmium) harms lungs and kidneys;
Hg (mercury) infects brain and nervous system;
Ni (nickel) and Zn (zinc) may cause dermatitis;
Alkalis burn mucous membranes and skin.
And what will happen to batteries after we provide them for recycling?
Batteries are sent to Lviv state enterprise “Argentum” – one of the three largest European plants, specializing in recycling waste chemical current sources, where they will be recycled.
You save nature; the state pays its processing costs back and gets useful industrial and medical alloys.
Activities of Delivery service centre “Adresat”
In December, 2013 Delivery service centre “Adresat” sent for recycling 80 kg of batteries.
In July, 2014 Delivery service centre “Adresat” sent for recycling 185 kg of batteries.
Environmental effect of these efforts is easy to be calculated...
